Hey, my name is Justin Ide

Justin is a photographer and photojournalist whose career has spanned continents and communities, driven by a deep commitment to storytelling with purpose. His journey began in the highlands of Guatemala as a Peace Corps volunteer, where he first picked up a camera to document grassroots development and rural life. That experience sparked a passion for using visual narratives to bridge cultural divides and illuminate underrepresented voices.

After returning to the U.S., Justin began his journalism career at a small daily newspaper in Fairmont, West Virginia, covering everything from labor strikes to local high school sports — often on the same day. That hands-on environment sharpened his instincts for capturing authentic, unguarded moments. A few years later, he joined the staff of The Boston Herald, where his work expanded to cover national and international stories, with a growing focus on social justice, immigration, and urban inequality.

Justin then served as Director of Photography at Harvard University’s Office of News and Public Affairs, leading a team of visual storytellers and shaping the institution’s visual identity across academic, research, and public-facing platforms. In this role, he continued to approach photography as both art and advocacy, bringing the same journalistic curiosity to higher education and institutional storytelling.

During his time at Harvard, Justin traveled extensively across Africa, covering stories related to public health, environmental change, and social unrest. These assignments, often in partnership with Harvard’s Medical School or School of Public Health, reflect his ongoing dedication to shedding light on complex global issues through a human-centered lens.

His work has appeared in national and international publications, exhibitions, and nonprofit campaigns, and is recognized for its emotional resonance, visual clarity, and commitment to truth.
